THE PAIN AND PLEASURE OF LOVE: REMII’S ‘BIKO’ IS A MUST-HEAR

Nigerian singer-songwriter Remii has always found his voice in music. Growing up as a shy kid in Festac, Lagos, the church choir became his sanctuary, a place where he could express himself freely through songwriting and performance. Music became more than a passion; it was his anchor. After moving to the UK in 2008, Remii immersed himself in the gospel scene, joining the Manchester-based collective Voices Beyond and later wowing judges on BBC’s Songs of Praise with a performance described as “phenomenal.”

Returning to Nigeria in 2020, he continued his music journey with the acclaimed group 121 Selah, finishing as runners-up in the Old Mutual Amazing Voices competition.

Now, as a solo artist, Remii blends the rich sounds of his Nigerian roots with Western influences, creating music that resonates deeply with listeners.

His latest single, “Biko,” is a soulful tale of unrequited love. The Igbo word for “please,” Biko, captures the ache of longing for someone who doesn’t feel the same way. The track captures the universal ache of unspoken love, framed through Nigeria’s cultural lens. With lines like “Are you feeling this too?” and “E be like say na voodoo”, Remii paints attraction as both mystical and disarming, a force that defies logic but demands honesty.

The song thrives in its contrasts: the urgency of a question (“Tell me I’m not alone… ”) against the breezy Afrobeat groove, or the poetic simplicity of “Tinini Tanana Biko Biko”, a melodic plea that feels like a lullaby and a prayer.

Written by Remii and produced by Fkyo, the track balances vulnerability and hope, making it both relatable and irresistibly smooth

Love is never straightforward, and “Biko” beautifully captures its complexities. Whether you’re whispering confessions under Lagos’s moonlight or dancing alone to its chorus, Remii’s plea “Tell me you love me back ” resonates as both a question and a quiet declaration: Let’s get lost in this together.

“Biko” is available now on all major streaming platforms.
